One Direction (1D) are an English-Irish pop boy band formed in 2010 in London, England. The band’s members included Niall Horan, Harry Styles, Liam Payne and Louis Tomlinson; former member Zayn Malik departed from the band in 2015. They signed with Simon Cowell’s record label Syco Records after forming and finishing 3rd in the seventh series of the British televised singing competition The X-Factor in 2010. The band propelled to global success by social media, the five albums of the group, Up All Night (2011), Take Me Home (2012), Midnight Memories (2013), Four (2014) and lastly Made in the A.M. (2015), which topped charts in most major markets, and generated hit singles such as ‘What Makes You Beautiful’, ‘Best Song Ever’, ‘Live While We’re Young’, ‘Story of My Life’ and ‘Drag Me Down’.
They have won approximately 200 awards including 7 Brit Awards, 4 MTV Video Music Awards, 6 Billboard Music Awards, 7 American Music Awards and 28 Teen Choice Awards. The group have embarked on 4 world tours, two of which were all-stadium. The band earned an estimated $75 million, in 2013, becoming the second highest earning celebrity under 30 as per the Forbes. The International Federation of the Phonographic Industry (IFPI) named the group the Global Recording Artist of the Year and the world’s best-selling artist of 2013. In 2015, Forbes ranked the band as the fourth highest-earning celebrities in the world, and in 2016 was the second.
1D became the first band, after the release of Four, in the U.S. Billboard 200 history to have One Direction’s first four albums debut at number one. In 2013, the band’s third album, Midnight Memories, was the best-selling album worldwide with 4 million copies sold globally. In 2014, The group’s Where We Are Tour, in support of Midnight Memories, was the highest-grossing concert tour, the highest-grossing tour by a vocal group in history as well as the 15th highest-grossing concert tour of all time, grossing $290.2 million. Billboard named them the Artist of the Year in 2014 and they went on hiatus in January 2016, allowing all members to pursue other projects. 1D have sold a total of 70 million records worldwide as of 2020.
Zayn Malik
Zain Javadd Malik, popularly known as Zayn Malik is an English singer and songwriter. He auditioned as a solo contestant for the British music competition The X-Factor in 2010. Malik was brought back into the competition, after being eliminated as a solo performer, together with four other contestants, to form the boy band that would later be known as One Direction. In March 2015, Malik left the group and subsequently signed a solo recording contract with RCA Records.
Liam Payne
Liam James Payne, popularly known as Liam Payne, is an English singer and songwriter. Liam Payne rose to fame as a member of the boy band 1D. He made his debut as a singer when Payne auditioned for the British television series X-Factor in 2008. He auditioned again in 2010, after being eliminated as a solo performer, and was put into a group with four other contestants to form 1D. He has also worked with other producers under the monikers ‘Big Payno’ and ‘Payno’ creating remixes for songs by his band and Cheryl.
Niall Horan
Niall Horan, whose full name is Niall James Horan, is an Irish singer and songwriter who rose to prominence as a member of the band 1D. He auditioned as a solo contestant for British singing competition The X Factor in 2010. Horan, Zayn Malik, Liam Payne, Harry Styles and Louis Tomlinson were put together in a band, after being eliminated as solo performers.
