Adele Laurie Blue Adkins, popularly known as Adele, is an English singer as well as songwriter. Laurie Adkins signed a recording contract with XL Recordings, after graduating from the BRIT School in 2006. She received the Brit Awards Critics’ Choice Award, in 2007, and won the BBC Sound of 2008 poll. In 2008, Adele’s debut album, 19, was released. The album is certified eight times platinum in the United Kingdom and three times platinum in the United States. It contains Adele’s first song, ‘Hometown Glory’, written when she was 16 years old and the song is based on her home suburb of West Norwood in London. In late 2008, Laurie Adkins made on Saturday Night Live and this boosted her career in the US. She won the awards for Best New Artist and Best Female Pop Vocal Performance, at the 51st Grammy Awards in 2009.

She is a daughter of an English mother, Penny Adkins, and a Welsh father, Marc Evans. Her father left when she was 2 years old, leaving her mother to raise her. Accompanied only by a piano in the song that was played by co-writer Wilson, she sings about the end of the relationship with her ex-boyfriend. It received widespread critical acclaim, with critics choosing the song as a highlight of album, 21, and praised the lyrics, its simple sound and her vocal performance. It is Adele’s song which was released on 23 October 2015 by XL Recordings as the lead single from her 3rd studio album, 25 (2015). She co-wrote the song with her producer, Greg Kurstin and the song is a piano ballad with soul influences, and lyrics that discuss themes of nostalgia as well as regret. It was acclaimed by music critics, upon release, who compared it favourably to her previous works and praised its lyrics, production and her vocal performance. The song was recorded in London’s Metropolis Studios.

It topped the charts in a record-breaking 36 countries, including the UK, where the song became her second chart topper, following ‘Someone Like You’ song and has the largest opening week sales in 3 years. It debuted atop the Billboard Hot 100, in the United States, reigning for ten consecutive weeks whilst becoming her fourth number-one single on the chart and breaking several records, including becoming the first song to sell more than a million digital copies in a week. The song had sold 12.3 million units globally, by the end of 2015, and it was the year’s 7th best-selling single while it stands as among the best-selling singles of all time.
