Career
She got her first recognition in acting in the year 2003 after her performance in Translations of Xhosa which earned her a Helen Hayes Award nomination for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Play. In the year 2006, she played the character Amphiarus at the New york Theatre Workshop and played again in 2008 at La Jolla Playhouse. She appeared on televison first as a nurse on Blue Bloods in the year 2012. Between the years 2011 and 2012, she sang “By My Side” as part of the original revival cast of Godspell at the Circle in the Square Theatre.
Orange Is the New Black
In the year 2012 around July/August, she auditioned for a role in Netflix comedy-drama series ‘Orange Is the New Black’ and a month later she was called by her representatives and was informed that she did not qualify for the role she had auditioned for, but they had good news for her since they wanted to offer her another role ‘Crazy Eyes’ and although she questioned why they thought she would be the right one for that role, when she got the script for it, it felt to her like the right fit. Therefore in the year 2013, she began potraying Suzanne “Crazy Eyes” Warren in the Netflix comedy-drama series Orange Is the New Black.
Upon joining the series, she obtained her Screen Actors Guild card which meant that she had become a full actor.
