Katheryn Elizabeth Hudson, who popularly known as Katy Perry, is an American singer, songwriter as well as television judge. Katy pursued a career in gospel music as a teenager, after singing in church during her childhood. Katy signed with Red Hill Records and in 2001, released her debut studio album Katy Hudson under her birth name, which was commercially unsuccessful. Katy moved to Los Angeles the following year to venture into secular music after Red Hill ceased operations. Later, Katy began working with producers Glen Ballard, Dr. Luke and Max Martin. In April 2007, she signed a recording contract with Capitol Records, after adopting the stage name Katy Perry and being dropped by The Island Def Jam Music Group and Columbia Records.

In 2008, Katy rose to fame with her second album, ‘One of the Boys,’ a pop rock record containing the controversial United States number one song ‘I Kissed a Girl’ and ‘Hot n Cold’. All subsequent albums have topped the United States Billboard 200 and the disco-influenced Teenage Dream (2010) spawned five chart topping United States Billboard Hot 100 singles ‘California Gurls’, ‘Teenage Dream’, ‘Firework’, ‘E.T.’ and ‘Last Friday Night’ — a record tying her with Michael Jackson’s Bad. Its follow-up record Prism (2013) was inspired by Katy’s divorce and incorporates pop and dance together with themes of self-reflection, everyday life as well as relationships. She became the first artist to have multiple videos reach one billion views on Vevo, with the music videos for its chart-topping songs ‘Roar’ and ‘Dark Horse’. On August 28, 2020, Katy’s sixth studio album Smile will follow.

She has nine United States Billboard Hot 100 number one singles and has also received various awards, including 4 Guinness World Records, 5 Billboard Music Awards, 5 American Music Awards, a Brit Award and a Juno Award. From 2011 to 2019, Katy has been included in the annual Forbes lists of highest-earning women in music. Katy is among the world’s best-selling music artists, having sold more than 18 million albums and 125 million singles worldwide. Katy released an autobiographical documentary known as Katy Perry: Part of Me (2012), in film, and voiced Smurfette in the 2011 film The Smurfs and its sequel in 2013. Perry’s Super Bowl XLIX halftime show performance is the most watched in history. In 2018, she began serving as a judge on American Idol.
