Joanne Rowling, popularly known as JK Rowling, is a British author, screenwriter, producer as well as philanthropist. J. K. is popularly known for writing the Harry Potter fantasy series. This fantasy series has won multiple awards and sold over 500 million copies, which made her become the best-selling book series in history. The books are the basis of a popular film series, over which she had overall approval on the scripts and was a producer on the final films. Rowling also writes crime fiction under the name Robert Galbraith.

She worked as a researcher and bilingual secretary for Amnesty International when Joanne Rowling conceived the idea for the Harry Potter series while on a delayed train from Manchester to London in 1990. From 1990, she waited for seven years for her first novel in the series, Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, was published in 1997 but before that in a span of seven years she went through a lot; she saw the death of her mother, birth of her first child, divorce from her first husband and family poverty. She released the Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows in 2007. She, since then, has written five books for adult readers and these include The Casual Vacancy (2012) and—under the pseudonym Robert Galbraith—the crime fiction Cormoran Strike series, which consists of The Cuckoo’s Calling (2013), The Silkworm (2014), Career of Evil (2015), and also Lethal White (2018). Rowling’s ‘political fairytale’ for children, The Ickabog, was released in instalments in an online version from 26 May to 10 July 2020.

Rowling progressed from living on benefits to being the world’s first billionaire author as per the Forbes, however, she disputed the assertion, saying she was not a billionaire since she lost her billionaire status when she gave away much of her earnings to charity. Rowling’s United Kingdom sales total in excess of £238 million, making her the best-selling living author in Britain and The 2020 Sunday Times Rich List estimated her fortune at £795 million, ranking her as the 178th richest person in the United Kingdom. Joanne was appointed a Member of the Order of the Companions of Honour (CH) at the 2017 Birthday Honours for services to literature and philanthropy. Rowling was named the ‘Most Influential Woman in Britain’ by leading magazine editors, in October 2010. She has supported multiple charities, such as Comic Relief, One Parent Families, Multiple Sclerosis Society of Great Britain, and launching her own charity called Lumos.

Rowling’s headmaster at St Michael’s, Alfred Dunn, has been suggested as the inspiration for the Harry Potter headmaster Albus Dumbledore. Her first secondary school English teacher, Steve Eddy, remembers her as ‘not exceptional’ but ‘among a group of girls who were bright, and quite good at English’. A French professor at Exeter, Martin Sorrell, remembers ‘a quietly competent student, with a denim jacket and dark hair, who, in academic terms, gave the appearance of doing what’s necessary’. Joanne recalls doing little work, preferring to read Dickens and Tolkien. She graduated from Exeter in 1986, after a year of study in Paris. She wrote a short essay about her time studying Classics titled ‘What was the Name of that Nymph Again? or Greek and Roman Studies Recalled’ in 1988 and it was published by the University of Exeter’s journal Pegasus.
