Age spots which are also known as liver spots or sun spots, are dark patches on the skin and may appear to be brown, grey or black in color.  These spots develop mostly on the areas of the skin that are mostly exposed to the sun.

These areas include the face, shoulders, the upper back, forearms and at the back of the hands. When the skin is exposed to the sun, there is an increase in the production of melanocytes that increase melanin in the skin which results to a darker skin color.

Age spots are not dangerous and do not cause any health problems, however one may feel uncomfortable having them. It is also advisable to see a doctor to rule out skin cancer. The following are some natural home remedies that one can use to fade these age spots.

Home Remedies For Age Spots

Apple Cider Vinegar

Apple cider vinegar contains natural alpha hydroxy acids, which help in lightening age spots. To use apple Cider Vinegar for age spots, mix it with olive oil so as to prevent the skin from drying. Apply the mixture on the skin and leave it on the skin for around 20 minutes then wash it off. Repeat this procedure daily until you get results. For people with sensitive skin, it is advisable to first dilute the apple cider vinegar with water.

Apple cider vinegar can also be ingested by mixing 1-2 tablespoons of apple cider vinegar in a glass of warm water and drinking it once daily for a smooth and age spot free skin. One can also add a dash of lemon into the mixture and sweeten with honey.

Aloe Vera

Aloe Vera has long been used to treat various skin ailments, including age spot. Extract the juice of a fresh Aloe Vera plant and rub it on the affected areas. Aloe Vera can be left on the skin since its very gentle but one can also rinse it off after a while when it starts to feel sticky. Continue with these remedy until the age spots fade away.

Lemon Juice

Lemon juice is a natural bleaching agent since it contains citric acid and vitamin C. To use lemon juice to fade age spot, extract the juice of a lemon and mix it with equal parts of water. Using a cotton ball, apply this mixture into the affected area and leave it for around 20 minutes before rinsing it off. Repeat this procedure twice daily until the age spots fade away.

Castor Oil

Castor oil contains healing properties which have proven effective in the treatment of age spots. To use castor oil to treat age spot, apply and massage it onto the skin both in the morning and evening until you see results. If you have a dry skin, you can mix the castor oil with coconut oil, almond or olive oil to add moisture into your skin.

Orange Juice

Orange juice contains vitamin C that is effective in treating age spots. Extract the juice of an orange and use a cotton ball to rub it onto the skin. The peels of an orange also contain vitamin C and calcium that aid in lightening the age spots. Apply the juice from the orange peel directly to the age spots. This will help to lighten the age spots.

Organic buttermilk

Buttermilk, Milk and yogurt contain lactic acid which help to exfoliate and rejuvenate the skin leaving it lighter. To fight age spot apply these directly to the affected areas and leave it for 20minutes before rinsing off. Use this daily until the age spots fade away.

Rosemary Essential Oil

Essential Oils are good for the skin. Using rosemary essential oil on the affected areas can help to get rid of these spots. Mix some rosemary essential oil with lemon juice and vinegar and massage it on the affected areas. Leave the mixture on the skin for around 20 minutes then wash off. Do this twice everyday until you see results.

Hydrogen Peroxide

Hydrogen peroxide can be used as a facial bleach to get rid of age spots. Use a cotton ball to apply diluted hydrogen peroxide into the affected areas. Repeat this procedure until the age spots fade away.

Sandalwood Paste and Rose Water

Sandalwood contains effective anti-aging properties, and is often used to reduce the appearance of age spots. Mix sandalwood powder and rose water to form a paste and apply it on the affected areas. Leave it to dry then wash it off. Repeat twice every week for best results.

Tomato Juice

The juice of a tomato helps to lighten and remove pigmentation and age spots. Rub the juice of ripe tomatoes on the age spots to fade them.

Onion Juice

Onions contain sulfur that act as an antiseptic agent. Onions also contain acids that help in exfoliating the skin.
Apply onion juice on the affected areas and leave it for 15- 20 minutes before washing it off. Do this once or twice a day. Onion juice can also be mixed with honey to reduce the smell of the onion.

Tips for Preventing age spots

There are several tips that one can follow to avoid developing age spots.

-Avoiding sun exposure between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. when the sun’s rays are most intense.

-Wearing protective clothing such as hats and long-sleeved shirts.

-Applying sunscreen at least 30 minutes before exposing yourself to the sun and keep reapplying after every two hours.

-Including alot of fruits and vegetables into your diet as the vitamins and minerals found in fruits and vegetables help to restore the natural texture and smoothness of the skin.

-Drinking water regularly through out the day as it helps to flush out the toxins from the body and is good for clearing skin problems and ailments.
